Development from 1911 to 1915

Between the years of 1911 and 1915 Warfield wrote only two articles on the subject of revelation and inspiration. Both were composed for The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, which was edited by James Orr. These articles are amazing for the way in which Warfield was able to pull his previous scholarship into a constructive and climactic piece of theology. These articles are the capstone of Warfield’s mature view on the matter of biblical revelation and its mode. So, let us begin by looking at Warfield’s view of revelation.

For Warfield, it would do no good to treat concursivity as an abstract theological concept that a theologian may use to win theological arguments while remaining aloof from its biblical ground. Thus, concursivity must be set within Warfield’s theology of revelation; the two cannot be divorced from one another, and that he understood as well as anyone. That context is to be found in Warfield’s 1915 article originally titled “Revelation,” written for The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia.70

It appears that this 1915 article is an extension of an earlier article under the same title written in 1909 for the Universal Cyclopedia and Atlas titled “The Idea of Revelation and Theories of Revelation.”71 In terms of substance, this earlier article is best classified as brief and cursory, especially when compared to his 1915 article. Thus, in the latter article we will see a fuller, much more robust doctrine of revelation from Warfield’s pen.

But there is something else we ought to notice from the outset. No longer does Warfield maintain his previous position that the whole of Scripture is included under the concusive mode of inspiration. In fact, in this, his final article on the topic, there are three modes of revelation clearly set forth. Let us take the time to examine Warfield’s theological scaffolding with regard to revelation.
